O Pomelo, Pomelo, Wherefore Art Thou Pomelo

The Pomelo is a citrus fruit native to South East Asia. I was first introduced to this fruit during a Thai cooking class a few years ago. We made the most amazing Thai salad that combined the citrus flavour of the pomelo, the heat from a red chilli and prawns....I know! What a combo!

These days I enjoy the fruit just on it's own. The taste is very similar to a grapefruit except not quite as sour, it's texture similar to a grapefruit but more firm, making it easier to handle.

This is how it usually looks in the grocery store......very intimidating!

It has a pretty thick rind rind that is easy too peel.

Remove it from the enveloping membrane (because it's bitter!) and enjoy it's amazing flavour!

Try it on it's own or in a Thai Salad! You will be pleased with the results and will add Pomelo to your future ingredient list!

Pomelo Thai Salad

Ingredients:
Pomelo flesh tear the flesh into small pieces 2 cups
Sautéed small – medium sized prawns skin and tails peeled off 150 g
Dry roasted shredded coconut 3 tbsp
Fried shallots 2 tbsp
Coriander leaves 1 tbsp
Mint leaves 1 tbsp
Red Thai chili chopped 1 tsp (optional) (small chilies are spicier than the bigger ones)

Ingredients for Dressing:
Fish sauce ½ tbsp
Palm sugar 1 tbsp
Lime juice 2 tbsp

In a dressing bowl, mix palm sugar, fish sauce and lime juice. Stir well. In a mixing bowl, add pomelo, prawns, fried shallots, roasted shredded coconut and peanut, coriander and mint leaves and toss with dressing.

Pomegranate Peeling Made Easy

Dating back to beyond 1000 B.C, the pomegranate is considered one of the oldest fruits in existence. Growing up to 15 feet in height, with the ability to live for over 100 years, and an antioxidant potential thought to be up to 3 times more powerful than green tea and wine, I can see why this fruit is considered a power food.

Pomegranates offer amazing dietary benefits, providing substantial amounts of potassium, Vitamin C and niacin, and high fiber. With so many health benefits, the pomegranate should be included in everyone's diet. They're a fabulous snack, great on salads, amazing stewed with meat, makes the tastiest juice and lets not forget the classic pomtini!

With over 600 arils (seeds) in one fruit, I can see how most people would look at eating the pomegranate as a daunting and tedious task. But adding them to your diet can be easy! I am here to show you how to de-seed this fruit in minutes!

The first thing you'll need to do is fill a bowl with water and then cut your Pomegranate in half.

Second, submerge one of the half of the fruit in the bowl of water and gently pull seeds away from the skin. The seeds will sink and the membrane (yellow) will float making it an easy and clean way to get the fruit out.

Once completing both halves, pour into strainer - look at that beautiful red deliciousness!!!

At this point it's ready to eat! You can store the arils of a pomegranate in a sealed plastic bag in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze them for later consumption. Frozen arils will be good after a span of 6 months in the freezer!

To freeze: spread them apart on a baking sheet that has been lined with wax paper. Put them in the freezer for no more than 2 hours and then place them into a plastic container or bag.

My First Quilt

I am a huge fan of quilts. Whenever I'm at an art show I often find myself at the quilt booth running my fingers over the different textures, admiring the beautiful colours and work that goes into making one. Buying a quilt is several hundred dollars so I decided to take a class and learn the art so I could make one for myself. Now I use the word art because if you look closely at the detail in a quilt, the fabric, the texture, the colours and the patterns, you will see and appreciate the masterpiece that it is. All these factors take a lot of thought and tons of time!

Was I the youngest in my class? Yes! But I feel quilting is making a comeback, especially among younger people. Take the modern quilt guild for example, it started in 2009 and now there are over 100 branches across the world! Even Toronto has one! Take a look at the website and see how the quilt patterns have changed. Long gone are the days of flowers and farm animals, now it's about colour and shapes.

The quilt I decided to do is called a sampler quilt. I't's made up of many different squares which is a great way to learn each one. I'm far from finished my quilt but I thought I'd post a few pics of my progress so far:

My quilt is made up of squares and those squares are made up of even smaller squares. Here's a picture of one square being pieced together.

These squares are called Flying Geese.

I will post more pictures as I finish it and of course the final product! If anyone has an interest in learning I encourage you to do it. There are many people in the city that teach both hand and machine quilting so there's an option for everyone. I've had so much fun making this and all my hard work (many, many hours) will be rewarded upon the completion of my beautiful new quilt!

Best Sugared Pecan Recipe for the Holidays!

'Twas the Wednesday before Christmas,

Outside not a 'flake,

This little creature was stirring,

Because she had to bake!

So here we are days before Christmas and the second day of Hanukkah and the baking has begun!
As the dear reader knows, I always like to try new recipes and this time of year is no exception (this year was lace cookies) but an annual favourite is my Sugared Pecans. As my gift to all of you here is the recipe.

Ingredients:

2 lbs Pecan halves
2 cups white sugar (no one said these were low cal)
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
dash of allspice (optional)
2 egg whites
2 tbs cold water
splash of pure vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat oven to 250*

In a bowl mix sugar, salt, nutmeg and allspice.

In a second bowl beat egg whites and water until fluffy. Add splash of vanilla and beat for a few more seconds until vanilla is mixed in.

Gently fold pecans into the egg mixture.

In 3 or 4 parts add the sugar mixture to the pecans and continue to fold until evenly coated.

Spread the pecans out onto a lightly greased baking sheet and bake on middle rack of your oven.

Bake pecans for a total of an hour stirring every 15 minutes.

Allow to cool before storing in an airtight container.

These little bites of heaven won't stick around for long! You can give them away in cute little jars or keep them for yourself to munch on (also great in a salad).

Savoury Shortbread

Most people associate shortbread with the holidays but I think they work well as an appetizer or to enjoy with your favourite glass of wine all year round!
There are so many combinations for savoury shortbread that it's good to just look at the ingredients you already have in your fridge and go from there. I like the combination of using a cheese and a fresh herb - sharp cheddars go great with rosemary, mild cheddars go well with garlic and just think of the possibilities that go with asiago! Gulp.... so good.
Last week I purchased some fresh sage for a braised beef recipe and had a ton left over. I always keep a big block of parmesan in my freezer so behold I had my combo!

In a bowl mix together 2 cups flour, 1 cup butter, 1/2 cup grated parmesan (or other cheese), 20 small leaves of sage (chopped) and a tsp of salt (I like to mix half regular salt with corse salt) I also added a pinch of cayenne pepper and mustard powder.

Work ingredients together until the dough comes together. If it's too dry add some more butter or a bit of water.

Here's a little tip - If you want to use your butter right from the fridge, grate it and it will become room temperature faster!

Once you dough comes together roll it out into logs in some plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least a half hour.

After you remove it from the fridge you can either cut it into rounds or if you prefer, you can press into cookie rounds.

Place on parchment paper and bake at 400* for 10-15 minutes - until golden brown.

ENJOY!!!

Mitten Ornaments

This morning marks the first snowfall (that I've seen) of the year! My new fireplace is being installed as we speak and the large flakes are slowly making their way to the ground so naturally I'm feeling inspired.

Here's a tutorial for an adorable christmas ornament that will look great on your tree but also as a gift topper. It's so easy to make and doesn't require a sewing machine - you can even use glue!

What you will need:

Felt -purchase at a craft store

Fur - bought at Fabricland in the ribbon section

Stuffing - bought at Fabricland but you can even use cotton balls.
Thread or glue.

Steps:

Download a template from the internet- I used one from Better Homes and Gardens. Then cut out two sides from your felt.

Sew around the edges leaving the top open. You can do this by hand or machine......or glue the two together around the edges if you don't like to sew!

Now stuff your mitten. I used quilters batting but you can use something as simple as a cotton ball.

Insert a ribbon loop for hanging, place the fur sticking out of the top and then sew a straight line across to secure it.

I think these are adorable and so easy to make!

Christmas Stocking for your Dog

This time of year always makes me excited for the Christmas holidays ahead and nervous for the chaos that accompanies them. All I know is that I have 4 different sewing projects on the go and I need to start finishing them before most of my free time runs out!

One of the smaller projects on the agenda was a Christmas stocking for Putter (my dog) and with the total time for this project being less than an hour, I felt it was the right one to complete!

Now I'm sure we can all agree that a stocking in the shape of well, a stocking could potentially be a "pet Peeve" (worst joke ever) so I thought a more canine friendly version might be nice! What better than sewing a cute bone to fill with your pooches favourite things!

So the first steps in making the dog bone stocking is to determine the size you want and the fabric you want. Once decided, draw out the pattern and then cut it out of your fabric.

Lay your fabric right sides out and pin the ribbon that your stocking will be hanging from between the fabric in the spot you'd like it to be.

I chose to do a zigzag stitch. Sew all the way around through both fabrics except leave the top. This will be your opening so sew them as 2 separate pieces still with the zig zag stitch.

Lastly, tie a big ribbon around it!

Complete! I think Putter likes it :)

Best Pumkin Soup!

About 3 weeks ago I purchased a pumpkin from a local farm I was visiting because lets face it, who can resist those yummy seeds! As each day passed I grew close with my pumpkin and thought what a waste to only use you for your scrumptious seeds, what shall we do with the rest of you? Carving a piece of art on the side of his perfect round body was not an option as I live in a walk up so the only thing left to prove his worthiness was to create the most delicious edible I could think of. Pumpkin, I don't believe I let you down.

PUMPKIN SOUP

Ingredients:

3 1/2 pounds fresh pumpkin - cut into 1 inch cubes (aprox 1/2 of a smaller size pumpkin)
1 medium onion - cut into circles
2 cloves garlic - chopped
1 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
dash of clove
Carton chicken broth (900 ml)
small can coconut milk (aprox 5 oz)
Tbsp lemon juice
salt to taste
pure maple syrup (just under 1/4 cup)

*Cut Your pumpkin, discard seeds, stringy guck and peel. Cut about 3 to 3.5 pounds into 1 inch cubes.

*Peel onion and slice into rings.

*Put your broth into pot and add your pumpkin, garlic, onion and spices and bring to a boil.

* Once boiling, reduce to low and simmer for aprox 20 min or until pumpkin is tender.

* In batches process in blender or food processor until smooth and return to pot.

*Add coconut milk, lemon juice, maple syrup, salt and adjust to taste. If you like it a bit sweeter put the whole 1/4 cup of syrup in or if not stick with less.

*Serve with a little sprinkle of nutmeg on top and a side of rummy roasted seeds. Enjoy!!!

Storing For The Winter Like A Good Little Ant!

It's October and the weather has started cool which means that some craft blogging is under way!

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be invited to join in on some canning. Being one of those people that makes a B-line straight to the preserves in any country store, you can only imagine how excited I got when I received the invite!

The process of canning is not as difficult as you may think, however, it is time consuming so be sure to carve out most of the day to do it. We decided to make Mango Chutney and Lemon Honey Apple Jam - the aroma's that filled the home were out of this world!

Chopping all the ingredients was the most time consuming but a big cup of coffee + great conversation made the time wizz by.

Ready to be cooked in the pot!

You need to sterilize your jars so heat in the dishwasher does the trick.

At the same time as the food is cooking you can boil your lids.

Look at all the juices! It's breaking down nicely :)

The final product is so rewarding, especially after you taste how yummy it is!

Thank you Kim and Annie for an amazing weekend! The art of canning will remain in my heart forever :)

Reflective Dog Collar

Those of you out there with black dogs can relate to how hard it is to find your pet in the dark! Below is a picture illustrating Putter at night :)

This is why we needed a reflective collar for our little boy!

What you need:

Nylon Webbing

Reflective ribbon

Plastic or metal buckle (mine was plastic)

* I purchased everything from Fabricland and all the supplies for this project should cost you less than $10 -you should have plenty leftover as well :)

Step 1. Measure length and sew reflective ribbon onto webbing.

Step 2. Sew buckle on each end.

Such an easy project!!!

(This is Putter's signature pose called "sleeping")

It needs to be worn with his other collar (what we clip his leash to) so I made his reflective collar a bit lose for comfort.

Also a great idea for any dog that goes camping, hiking or likes the outdoors!

"No Hands" Dog Leash

Hello!

It has been way too long since my last blog post! I've had a lot of distractions over the last couple of months keeping me away from my "writes" including a new dog! Now I know what you all must be thinking......."now she's going to do lot's of crafts related to her new puppy"....... and I want you all to know that you are absolutely right! At least for the next little while hehe :)

On a recent trip to Woofstock (a local festival for dogs) I noticed they were selling running leashes for $50-$60! There was no way I was going to pay that when I knew I could make the same thing at home for a fraction of the cost.

Materials:

8ft Flat Nylon Webbing (found at fabric store)

Grommet

Grommet tool

2 metal hooks

1. Measure out the Nylon webbing to the length you desire- plus 4 inches for attaching hooks

2. Mark the nylon where to add the grommets - I wanted the option of mine to go across my chest and around my waist.

3. Use the grommet tool and a hammer create the holes in the nylon for the grommets. Do not feel intimidated doing this. There are very easy instructions on the box of grommets :) I also recommend doing this outside on a very hard surface like concrete.

4. Now sew the hooks on either end. I used 2 rows of triple stitching (back and fourth 3 times) to secure.

And voila! Your new hiking / running / walking leash!

Square Pouch Tutorial

Back from vacation and itching for a new project! I decided to sew a new makeup pouch (a small enough project to use the last bit of my favourite fabric "Beach Boys".)

I found the idea on Three Bears and adjusted the measurements a bit.

1. Cut two 9' x 12' pieces of fabric

Because my fabric was so thin I decided to add interfacing to it. It not only makes the fabric stiffer but it also becomes a sort of lining.

2. Fold over and press 1/2 inch (this is where you will sew the zipper so make sure the folds are at the top of your fabric.

If your zipper isn't long enough (like mine) add two folded tabs at each end. To make these tabs fold fabric in half and press, then fold each end in 1/4' and press again.

If you have a long zipper this step is not necessary.

3. Sew on your zipper. Look how cute those beach boys are!

4. Sew a seam at the bottom of your pouch. This will attach the two pieces at the bottom.

5. Now open it up so the bottom seam and zipper are aligned. Pin your sides and sew.

This next step is a bit tricky to explain.

6. Pinch the corners out and pin.

Looks like a chicken lol.

Anyway, keep pinching to the size and shape of box you would like. Use a ruler to measure each corner.

7. Then sew each corner on all four sides.

8. Cut your corners 1/2' from seam and then turn right side out.

Lemon Basil Shrimp Pasta Recipe

As the weather is getting warmer, my palate is beginning to change. As much as I love winter root vegetables, heavy stews and chilli, I'm ready to move on to fresh and light meals!

Here's a simple pasta I whipped up last night that definitely gave me my fix!

Lemon Basil Shrimp Pasta

Ingredients:

1 package of spaghetti or linguine pasta

1 tablespoon olive oil

6 cloves of garlic, minced

1/2 cup chicken broth

1/4 cup white wine

1/2 tsp lemon zest

1 lemon juiced

salt and pepper to taste

1 package of peeled and deveined shrimp

3-4 tablespoons butter

1-2 tablespoon chopped fresh basil

Directions:

1. Cook pasta according to package directions - al dente ; drain.

2. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat and saute garlic about 1 minute.

3. Mix in Chicken broth, wine, lemon juice, zest, salt and pepper. Reduce heat and simmer until liquid is reduced by half.

3. Stir in shrimp, butter and basil into the saucepan. Cook until shrimp is pink ( 2-3 minutes).

4. Stir in the pasta and continue cooking for another 2 minutes, until well coated.

ENJOY!

Figgy's Ofelia Dress

After running into a bit of a snag with the sleeves and not buying enough ribbon, I finally finished Ava's dress!

I picked up this adorable Figgy's pattern at The Workroom on Queen West, however there is a list of places you can buy from on their site.

The Pattern comes in sizes 12mo - 6y and includes designs for the dress, a shirt, and knee-length bloomers! So cute!

This dress was a lot of fun to make and now I can't wait to see Ava in it!

Enamel Coated Glass Bottles

Here's a new way to recycle old jars and bottles! Transform your glass containers into beautiful vases by coating them with enamel paint.

For my project I used white enamel, which shows up as different shades of green depending on the tint of the glass.

What you need:

Glass Jars

Dishwasher-safe Enamel Paint

Paint's Surface Conditioner

The paint and Conditioner is found at most craft stores - I got mine at Michaels.

Instructions:

1. Wash the bottle inside and out with warm soapy water and let dry.

2. Pour in a small bit of the paint's surface conditioner - this primes the glass for the enamel. Make sure to coat evenly and pour out excess. Stand bottle upright and dry for an hour. (Read the label of your conditioner but mine said I had to use it within 4 hours of application)

3. Pour in enough enamel to coat the inside. Swirl around slowly making sure to coat evenly and not to miss any spots - return excess to the container for reuse.

4. Dry bottle upside down on paper towel for 48 hours. During the first hour, periodically wipe excess enamel from the rim with a damp cloth.

Next time you're at a flea market (I know all the time right?), buy up some old unique jars and watch how beautiful you can make them!

On This Snowy Day

Inspired by my sister -in -law, I decided to get some fresh flowers on this snowy day.

Hydrangeas are so beautiful but also quite sensitive when it comes to care. Here are a few tips to help you appreciate this gorgeous flower and extend it's life once you bring it home.

Hydrangea's have a woody stem so its water absorption ability is poor compared to other fresh flowers. To counter this problem, I usually use a hammer or the flat end of a handle to smash the bottom of the stem. This is to ensure that the flowers will be able to absorb water at a faster rate and keep the hydrangea’s blooms hydrated at all times.

Place the hydrangea into cold water - they love cold.

Cut the hydrangea’s stem every 2-3 days and never expose them to direct sunlight.

Dishwasher Magnet

Clean or dirty? That is always the question when it comes to the dishwasher.

This idea comes from Futuregirl. Here is my take on this adorable magnet!

It doesn't take very long to make and you can put your own spin on it. I used foam for the base and felt for the rest of it. There is a magnet in the skirt and the letters were glued on.

Amazing Bread Recipe

On a recent trip out west to visit my family, I learned how easy it was to make your own bread!

Over the duration of my visit, my sister in law made two loaves - each took about 3 hours to make, start to finish, using a bread maker. Throwing the ingredients in takes only 5 minutes and the remainder time is the rising and baking (which the machine does for you).

This inspired me to get a bread maker and all I can say is wow- I have become a bread making machine!

Making your own bread is so easy! These days It can easily fit into anyone's busy life with program options like cooking overnight (wake up to the smell of fresh bread....sigh) or "quick bake" which only takes an hour!

It feels so good to know exactly what is going into my bread and it tastes so much better than what you get at the store! Nothing beats warm bread and butter.

Here is a recipe I have been making most frequently but I hope to post many more!

Ingredients:
1 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2 tablespoons white sugar (I use a bit less)
1 (.25 ounce) package bread machine yeast
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3 cups bread flour ( I use half whole wheat and half white bread flour)
1 teaspoon salt

Directions:

Place the water, sugar and yeast in the pan of the bread machine. Let the yeast dissolve and foam for 10 minutes. Add the oil, flour and salt to the yeast. Select Basic or White Bread setting, and press Start.

Harman Kardon Piggy Bank

While doing some early "spring cleaning" I came across an old Harman Kardon iSub that has been sitting in my closet for years!

Learning that it wasn't even compatible with anything that I owned, I knew I had to get rid of it. It seemed like such a shame, the iSub just looks so cool!

After a final attempt to find it a new home with my neighbours (which failed) Mark came up with the brilliant idea of making it into a piggy bank!

Here are some photo's of the process and the very cool looking bank!

Everything had to be unscrewed and the bottom speaker needed to be taken out

It's pretty fun dropping the coins in and aiming for the different holes.....looks like something you'd see at a Science Center.

Make Yourself Some Cute Coasters!

These Coasters are so cute because they are made by you!

It's an easy project that doesn't take much time to do - the hardest part is deciding which colours to use!

Cut out two squares from either the same or two different fabrics. (I use different so my coasters can have two different sides).

To decide how big to cut your fabric, figure out how big you'd like your coasters to be and add 1/2 inch to each side of measurement.

Place your fabric with the right sides of the print facing together and sew 1/2 inch seam all the way around, leaving a 2 inch opening at the bottom ( to turn your project right side out)

Before turning right side out, trim all four corners being careful not to cut through any stitches.

By doing this, it allows the corners to be pointy once turned out.

Turn your project right side out.

Push out the corners (use a tool if needed)

Press your coaster so it sits nice and flat (make sure your two inch opening is turned in before pressing)

Sew another seam all the way around on the right side (this seam will close the two inch opening).

Now your coaster is complete!

There are so many variations you can do as well.

These Coasters can be made by sewing a seam around all the sides and using pattern edge scissors to create the jagged edge.

Dog Coat

I finally finished Becky's doggy coat and just in the nick of time! I was starting to think winter was winding down only to wake up to a beautiful blanket of white snow outside.

Because I had no pattern for this coat I used Willow's old jacket as a template. Becky is much thinner so I needed to sew it smaller around her chest and length.

The fabric I used is waterproof and I used a jogging fleece for the lining. The grey and black ribbon on the sides are actually reflectors for night time and I used velcro on all the panels to make it easier to put the coat on and off.

Becky is the best model - look how fabulous she looks in her new digs!

Slow Cooker Moroccan Chicken -Chickpea and Apricot

When it comes to slow cooker recipes they can be so hit and miss with the texture and flavour so it's up to us to pass along the good ones!

This is one I came across on the www.food.com website and it turned out to be really tasty.

You can eat it on it's own but I served it on rice.

Ingredients
6 large boneless, skinless chicken breast chopped into large chunks (I used a mixture of thighs and breast)
1 tablespoon flour or 2 tablespoons cornflour
2 large onions, chopped
3 -4 garlic cloves chopped finely
1 -2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 inch fresh gingerroot, finely chopped
6 ounces dried apricots ( I cut them in half )
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 (14 ounce) cans chopped tomato
2 (14 ounce) cans chickpea OR ( I used 1 can chickpea + 1 can white kidney beans)
3 tablespoons honey
1/2 pint chicken stock
1 pinch saffron or 1 teaspoon tumeric
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) ( I used 1/2 tsp and it was just a little spicy)
salt and black pepper
2 carrots peeled & diced (optional)

Directions

-Heat up olive oil in a frying pan/skillet & saute chopped onions & garlic for 5-10 minutes.

-Add chicken stock & gradually mix in flour or cornflour until well mixed & not lumpy.

-Add honey & tomato paste - mix well.

- Add herbs,spices & finely chopped ginger with salt & pepper to taste.

- Finally add tinned tomatoes & mix well.

-Pour the above tomato,onion & spice mix into slow cooker

- Add chicken & chickpeas & mix well. ** If you are substituting the can of kidney beans add them in halfway through or closer to the end to avoid mushiness.

- Add dried apricots making sure they are covered by juice.

-Add the carrots

- Give it a gentle but good stir to mix everything together well.

-Crock Pot or Slow Cooker - Cook on high for about 3 to 4 hours OR automatic with keep warm facility for up to 8 hours.

It's not too often I see a small little shop hosting my favourite Bigfoot Series written by local Torontonian Graham Roumieu.

Gathered Clutch Tutorial

This project was pretty easy to follow and the pictures were helpful! However, be sure not to make the same mistake I did with the corners. I should have cut bigger tabs for the zipper ends and I didn't leave myself enough extra fabric allowing space to sew around the zipper at the top corners. (This all must sound very confusing but it might make more sense while making the clutch.)

Next time I will cut the fabric tabs bigger and leave more room beside as well.

Here's my finished clutch (you can see the top right corner of the bag where I struggled).

I will definitely be making this again and recommend it as a fun quick project!

Make Your Own Dry-Erase Board

Bad perm, braces and acne.......why document these days you wish to forget?

Let's get rid of those old framed photo's and give a new purpose to that old picture frame!

By framing a pretty piece of paper, wallpaper or fabric (I'd use a light colour) you have an instant dry-erase board!

Write down all your daily to-do's with a dry-erase marker and instantly wipe away and update when needed.

I used an old fabric with little words on it - thought it would suit something I'd be writing words on.

It looks cute on it's own or with writing on it!

I also think it would look amazing with a textured white fabric and no border....

Maple French Toast and Bacon Cupcakes - Ya You Heard Me!

Now that I have your attention I will start off by saying that these little angels are delicious! The combination of ingredients actually create the flavour of French Toast -and who doesn't love bacon with their French Toast?

The cake part of this cupcake infuses the flavours of nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla, duplicating the french toast. The maple buttercream icing represents the syrup and top it off with crisp bacon......sigh.

What you will need for the cupcake:

-3/4 cup unsalted butter at room temperature

-1 cup sugar

-1 1/2 cups cake flour, sifted

-1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

-1/4 tsp. fine salt

-1/2 cup milk, at room temperature

-1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

-1 tsp. grated nutmeg

-1 tsp. cinnamon

-3 large eggs, at room temperature and separated

-Bacon

What you will need for the Buttercream:

-2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature

-2 3/4 cups confectioners' sugar

-2 tsp.heavy cream

-3/4 tsp. maple extract

Directions:

1.Preheat oven to 375*. Place rack in middle of oven and line the muffin pan with paper cupcake liners.

2. Combine butter and sugar and mix on low speed until just incorporated. Raise speed to high and mix until fluffy (approx. 10 min) - if using stand mixer be sure to stop and scrape sides often.

3. Meanwhile, in a medium sized bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon. Set aside.

4. In a small bowl stir milk and vanilla and set aside.

5. Add the egg yolks to the creamed butter one at a time, waiting for each one to stir in before adding the next.

6. Reduce the speed of mixer to low. Alternately, add the flour mixture in 3 additions and the milk in 2 additions, waiting for each to be fully incorporated before adding the next - scrape sides of bowl occasionally.

Raise speed to medium and mix briefly until batter is smooth. Transfer to a large bowl.

7.In a clean bowl whip egg whites on high speed until stiff peaks are formed. (If using a stand mixer use the whisk attachment)

8. Working in three batches, using a spatula, fold the egg whites into the batter until just incorporated. Divide the batter evenly among the cups in the muffin pan. Bake, rotating the pan once for even browning and until a toothpick comes out clean. ( 20-30 min)

9. Remove cupcakes and cool completely.

Maple Buttercream Frosting:

1. Mix the sugar and butter on low speed until combined. Increase speed to high and mix until light and fluffy.

2. Reduce speed to low and add the heavy cream and maple extract. Store in the refrigerator until somewhat stiff. ( may be stored up to 3 days)

Bacon:

Bake in oven on 425* on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake 10 minutes and drain grease, bake for another 5-7 minutes.

mmmmmm bacon.......

Finally, frost the cupcakes and crumble the crisp bacon on top!

How many of you online shop? It seems like there is a clear division between people that swear by this concept and those who fear it. I recently took a leap into the "online" world and was glad I did because it seems like there are some good deals to be had with a bit of digging.

In a quest for a new winter coat last year I stumbled upon Montreal based designer Soia Koy.

The design of these coats are to die for and they are manufactured right here in Canada. The quality is

amazing with clean lines, chunky buttons and a surprise pop of color in the lining that I just love!

The coat I wanted in store was $500. As much as I felt I deserved this splurge it would have to be a treat for myself the following year. As a teaser, I went to check out their website just to see what other designs they had. I was thrilled when I saw that all the coats were marked down 50 – 60% off of their list price!

I ordered my coat for $235, taxes and shipping. And I got a fantastic Soia Koy hanger with delivery! What a steal.

It didn't take long for me to find another excuse to cyber shop and upon realization I will be travelling more for work I knew exactly what needed to be done.

I've always liked Heys luggage, I love the hard case concept and the fun array of colors and designs they come in. They even

make eco friendly bags made out of recycled water bottles. And wow, another Canadian company!!

Since window shopping on the web has become my new favorite hobby, I fired up my friend the net

book when I got home and Googled Heys to see what I could find. And what I found was extremely

exciting – list prices half or a third of what is offered at retail!!

I purchased the XCase – the quintessential Heys bag, boasting “the lightest carryon bag in the world”.

Mark McLean at the Gladstone

Last night we had the pleasure of seeing our friend Mark McLean's art Exhibit at this year's Come Up To My Room Alternative Design Event at the Gladstone Hotel. This cool art event hosts various alternative artists over two levels of the hotel.

After being offered a "free hug" on arrival and pushing through the Queen West art crowd, we found ourselves in front of Mark's exhibit.

My favourite piece of Mark's had to be his impressive 5ft x 3ft (approx.) representation of the peace sign. From a few feet back this blue and white masterpiece looks like a very textured painting of a hand giving a peace sign. However, when you get close you realize it is created by thousands of little toy soldier figurines!

Very cool.

It's an Alexander Henry fabric called "Beach Boys", naturally.

I couldn't resist giving this adorable vintage looking fabric a pattern it deserved.

Easy Fix

Winter is upon us and it's pretty easy for our front halls to start looking like an unorganized mess!
One of my biggest pet peeves is when a boot falls over creating a domino effect. Soon enough not one boot is left standing and my foyer looks like a disaster.

Here's a cheap fix I came up with last year to keep my boots looking more orderly and neat.

You will need:

-unbroken (still intact) chopsticks

-some paint (I use acrylic)

You can choose to keep your chopsticks natural or paint them for a fun look.

If painting them, hang on some dental floss to dry- this is a good way to make sure no paint is stuck between them while drying.

Allow 24 hrs to dry and then use them on your thin floppy boots.

After some wear and tear your chopsticks may break apart. If this happens try them out on one of your plants! Nothing hold up a leaning cactus better than a chopstick :)

Everything Is Better With Nutella

Being the product of a mother that has a great affection for chocolate and a father that loves hazelnuts, it's probably no surprise I inherited the "Nutella" gene.

FACT: The amount of Nutella jars sold annually if lined up, would wrap around the moon four times! Obviously, I'm not alone....

Here's a tasty recipe for all you Nutella Freaks out there.

I discovered this recipe from another blog and had to make it!

A combination of Nutella and bananas = the perfect marriage.

Nutella Banana Bread

Ingredients

2 cups all purpose flour

3/4 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

1/4 cup room temperature unsalted butter

1 cup sugar (I use brown sugar)

2 large eggs

1 1/4 cups mashed ripe banana

1/3 cup milk ( I use 1%)

1 tsp. vanilla extract

3/4 cup Nutella

Directions

-Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 8x4 inch loaf pan with nonstick spray

-In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking soda & salt.

-In another large bowl, beat sugar and butter until blended. Add eggs one at a time, beat well after each addition. Add banana, milk and vanilla, and beat until blended.

-Gradually add flour mixture, beating constantly until blended ( don't over mix)

-Spoon Nutella into a small dish and soften in the microwave for about 15 seconds. Add one cup of the banana bread batter to the Nutella and stir until blended.

-Spoon Nutella batter alternately with plain banana bread batter into the prepared pan. Swirl batters together with a knife.

-Bake 50 to 60 minutes. It may seem a tiny bit undercooked, but that's what makes it good. Cool for at least 15 minutes in the pan, and then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Delicious!

Neat As A Button

Look how cute these little guys are! My fridge is covered with these buttons and I have to say that they are a great addition! Not only are they small and cute, they can be quite strong depending on the magnets you use. This is a very easy project so let's get started!

What You Will Need

Magnets
Fabric
Pliers
Scissors
Cover Button Kit (found at Fabricland)
Glue (Strong)

Cut a circle from your fabric. Size will be specified on your Button Kit.

Using your pliers, remove the metal hook off the back of portion of the button.

Place the top half of your button on top of the wrong side of fabric and then push down into the white mold.

While still in the mold fold down the fabric ends ( I add a bit of glue to secure) and top with the back portion of the button. Push down to make sure its secure.

Pop the fished button from the mold. Add glue to the back of the button and attach the magnet.

Allow to dry and then admire your finished project!
